Digg on Safari

by venukb on July 30, 2007

Every now and then when I get bored with browsing on Firefox, I switch to Safari and the one thing I like in this browser is the rendering of web pages. Each site looks different and nice :). Today I was trying to login to Digg and I found that the login form just wouldn't show up in the Safari Browser. When you click on the the login link, the form pops down from the top of the header. digg3 For some reason on Safari, the header does expand to accommodate the login form, but the text boxes which accept the user name and password never show up !!! ...

How To: Make your blog mobile browser compatible

by venukb on July 26, 2007

After launching the Internet browser on my HTC Touch, the first site I opened was of my own blog. The browser almost came to halt while loading the home page. When I loaded other sites such as GMail, Flickr, Google Search one thing I noticed was that all these sites had a page compatible with the mobile browser. The content fitted exactly to the bounds of the handset display. Images were kept to minimal, so was the content ! A search for Wordpress+mobile on Google took me to Alex Kings Wordpress Mobile Edition plug-in for Wordpress. The package consists of a Wordpress plug-in which detects requests from Mobile Browsers. It also has a Wordpress theme which ...

MMS Configuration for Airtel

by venukb on July 26, 2007

After switching over to HTC Touch, I did have a tough time configuring MMS on the handset. Matters were made worse by Airtel's "amazing" customer care service. Initially I was told that the settings would be sent to my phone and that this would avoid the pain of doing the manual configuration. The settings never came; after few more calls to the customer service, I realized that my old Sony Ericsson phone was still registered in Airtel's database and they were trying to send the wrong setting. I finally was able to manually configure the settings not with the help of Google but with little assistance from NowSMS. So if you are stuck with configuring MMS for Airtel on a Windows ...

HTC Touch Smartphone

by venukb on July 24, 2007

HTC Touch, also known as the HTC P3450 is a Windows Mobile 6 powered smartphone designed and manufactured by HTC (A Taiwanese based manufacturer)

I heard about HTC Touch Phone from my brother when he returned from Taiwan. When we stopped by a shopping mall we even had a check on the HTC Touch in a mobile phone shop.

However due to the unavailability of a demo phone, we were not able to get a good overview of this touch phone and hence decided to defer the purchase until we had good knowledge of its features and shortcomings.

I came back and had a look at all the

8 Random facts about me !

by venukb on July 18, 2007

I've been tagged by Shankar to write 8 Random facts about me. Here it goes: On my character front, I find it little difficult to handle praises showered on me :). I keep smiling, even for things which I shouldn't. I'm analytical and rarely emotional. I easily get angry and I am/probably finding/will find ways to control it. Over the years many people have labeled me as a "complex character". I've also been appreciated for my character analysis skill as well ! I'm a complete vegetarian. ! I love chocolates and it helped me survive in China ! I love fried food and its high time I did a check on my cholesterol levels ! I love watching movies ! Yes I'm ...

LCD Monitor - Which one to go for ?

by venukb on July 17, 2007

I have been finding my laptop's 15.4" display too small to work on and hence was thinking of buying a Flat Panel LCD monitor. From the past 2 days I have been researching on products from different vendors and I finally ended up in a confused state. At my workplace they have 19 inch Dell monitors (recently widescreen versions also arrived) and these monitors are a treat to work with. So first I went to check on Dell monitors available in India. dell Paul's review of Dell's 30 inch LCD display was also one of the factors for checking out Dell first :) . 17" and 19" inch ...

Preventing Comment Spam

by venukb on July 13, 2007

The recent problem of spam comments bypassing the Akismet filter made me realize that its too bad to rely completely on one service. For one I spent considerable amount of valuable time deleting comments. The other problem was created when these spam comments made their way as "subscription comments" and I got many mails from users asking me the steps to un-subscribe for the comments. nospam Here are some of the alternatives to prevent comment spam: Bad Behavior Akismet focuses only on handling Comment/Pingback/Trackback spam. Your blog might be subject to other attacks such as email harvesting, automated cracking attempts etc. Bad Behavior, conceived in 2005 as a fingerprinting method for HTTP requests, ...

Theme update for the site

by venukb on July 11, 2007

There are thousands of Wordpress themes available out there;every now and then I stumble on amazing themes which I would love to use for my site. The only thing keeping me off from doing this regularly is the effort required in modifying/customizing the theme. I have made another theme change (4th) and this time I have adopted the Silhouette theme from Brian Gardner. onlinediary When Shankar initially showed me this theme, I felt that the header was a little dark. However when I applied and saw the theme in Safari Browser, it looked amazing. The other reason for adopting this theme is the 3 column layout which I ...
