Fight for the Indian Skies

by venukb on April 29, 2007

This is one picture doing rounds in the E-mail forwards. Worth putting it down here.

As seen from the above photo, the skirmish in the skies is now turning into a war of words. Kingfisher and Jet Airways are now fighting each other on the streets, in an advertising battle.

GoAir, one of the new entrant into Indian skies and also one of the fastest growing airline in India has a punch at both Kingfisher and Jet airways in this advertising campaign.

SimpleCSS - Making CSS Simple !

by venukb on April 27, 2007

Simple CSS is a style sheet creator for Mac and Windows. It supports CSS 2.0 specification and is a great tool for CSS beginners and experts.

The tools lets you to create a project and input all the different CSS properties via tabbed pages.

You can even import a existing CSS page and edit the same. What is missing is a preview pane, which could show the CSS applied to a HTML text; would definitely have been a nice add-on.

Nevertheless a very useful app and it does come with a nice little online documentation as well !

Technorati Favorite Exchange

by venukb on April 25, 2007

Kawaiikuma at DoshDosh has been running a interactive experiment from some time called as "Ultimate Technorati Favorites Exchange". (Thanks to Garry for pointing me to this programme)

After I left a comment in DoshDosh's post 100 people have add this blog as their favorite. (Before I "enrolled" for the programme, the count stood at 7).

Increase in the favorite count will have a effect on the Technorati ranking of the site and hence might improve the traffic to the site over the period of time.

In sprit of this experiment I am also extending the Technorati Favorite Exchange.

Participating in this programme/experiment is very easy :)

Automated GUI Recorder

by venukb on April 24, 2007

Eclipse Testing and Performance Tools Platform Project project has a great write-up on using TPTP's automated GUI recorder.

TPTP's Automated GUI Recorder (AGR) works by registering listeners with the SWT's display instance to record all incoming UI events that directly correspond to user's actions. The recorder keeps track of the context of the events and generates a script that allows the tool to playback the events in the respective order that the user recorded them. The generated script corresponds to a single test case that is embedded in a test suite which users can use to run in quick mode or standard mode (

AGR gives users the ability to also insert verification hooks based on

RSS Bandit - Alternative to FeedDemon

by venukb on April 17, 2007

FeedDemon, the popular RSS feed reader for windows is/was one of my favorite application. It has a clean user friendly interface and reading/managing the feeds is a treat with this application. Its also one of the few desktop based readers which can synchronize with an online service -Newsgator. However FeedDemon comes at a price (30$) and I have been searching for a good alternative to FeedDemon from some time now.

I did try to shift to Google Reader many times but somehow I found the UI sluggish and for certain operations (marking feeds read) you have to go through a lot of clicks.RSS Bandit

Checking backlinks

by venukb on April 16, 2007

Backlinks are the incoming links to a website or web page and the number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of the website or a web page.

Search engines often use the number of backlinks that a website has as one of the factors for determining the website's search engine ranking. For example, Google's PageRank algorithm uses backlinks to help determine a site's rank.

In today's SEO world, more than 95% of the focus is on building quality backlinks.

BackLinkWatch lets you discover the number of sites linking to your site or web page.

It also lists the page rank of the page

Landing page for the blog

by venukb on April 11, 2007

A landing page is the first page seen by a visitor visiting a site. (Generally from a search engine)

Seth Godin hailed as the ultimate entrepreneur of Information Age has a very interesting say on Landing pages.

Taking a cue from that article I integrated the "Landing Site" plugin for Wordpress.

The plugin does the following tasks:

Retrieves the HTTP referrer from the referral URL If its a valid reference (search engine); retrieves the keyword used in the search Retrieves the posts related to this keyword and lists the same.

Example screenshot for a search done via Google for Keyword "Airtel Data Card"

Is it really helpful ?

Acer - Upgrade to Vista

by venukb on April 9, 2007

In spite of hearing all the negative feedback on Windows Vista I am still very keen on upgrading my Acer laptop from XP to Vista. I had tried the Beta version of Vista on the laptop and worked pretty well.

I got my Acer 1690 laptop in the first quarter of 2006 and wasn't aware that Acer was running a upgrade program for vista.

Acer's Express Upgrade to Windows Vistaâ„¢ offer lets you enjoy all the benefits of Windows Vistaâ„¢ on your Acer computer. Any Acer Windows Vistaâ„¢ Capable or Windows Vistaâ„¢ Premium Ready PC bought between October 26, 2006 and March 15, 2007 includes an Express Upgrade to Windows Vistaâ„¢ option that presents you with the
