YouTube – Indian Clones

by venukb on December 10, 2006

YouTube is the most popular free video sharing Web site which lets users upload, view, and share video clips.

A slew of Indian video hosting sites are also trying to become the YouTube of India. As of now there are 3 4 players a lot of players in this race !

MeraVideo – Redefining Desi Entertainment
ApnaTube – Desi Broadcasting
Infeedia – No Punch Line :)
AapkaVideo – Director Ban Jao
CanaraVideo – Upload,Watch and share !

I tried to play a video in Meravideo and the browser (Firefox) crashed. Not sure whom to blame ! Infeedia’s home page is slower than my website !

Clones generally don’t work unless there is some unique feature being offered. None of these site have anything unique compared to YouTube ! However some “Desi” videos might show up in these sites faster than YouTube

Update

Since the time I wrote this post many visitors have pointed me to a lot of other video sharing sites. Here is the udpated list:

Konkan TV
WisdomOfIndia TV
BollyWood Tube
LayFile – Seems to be a popular site;primarily because of steamy adult videos !
MotionFlicks – More of bollywood video content
VideoCurry – New kid on the block !
VideoChutney

Thanks to everyone for pointing out these sites, if any of you are the site owners and want to add more description, send the same using the contact page.

Hey, you can add one more to the online desi video sharing services list. It’s AapkaVideo, an online service that allows you to upload, share and watch videos.

AapkaVideo is targeted at Indians, who just wants to post videos and share them with his friends and family. To upload videos, users should have a free account with the service. After registering, they can immediately start uploading videos. The video streaming is fast and the overall experience is much better than others.

You can upload videos with just a few clicks using the easy-to-use interface. Share a video by creating a link and emailing them to others. You can even also share multiple videos at a time. Users have to click on the links emailed to watch the videos.

You can easily browse through the categories available for watching videos and also upload videos to a particular category. AapkaVideo will remove videos that violate the terms of service. Users can also report videos that are offensive, obscene and illegal. Besides removing the video from the site, the account of the user who uploaded the video will be immediately terminated.

Rohan-Nihar-Veena
I definitely don’t want this post to be a platform for vendettas. I checked both canaravideo and konkan tv. Each have their pro’s and cons and there is no use fighting via comments.

So in this good spirit I am deleting your comments from this post. All the best with your video ventures.

Thanks Venu,

Thats what being a gentleman is all about. I appreciate it.

And you are 100% right. using other peoples blogs and/or real estate to flame each other is not just simply wrong it’s venomous.

Hey, some magics are happening in konkantv…. a video is uploaded few minutes ago and the viewers are more than 6000 for each video…that too Nepali viewers. I think the moderator is thinking the viewers are fool who cant understand anything. If you think logically,Nepal is a very small country and the economy level is also not good as India…and if 10000 people have got the internet and can spend time infront of internet watching a small video channel of India, then gosh, it should be richer than India isnt it… I hope is nt this makes sense???
Mr. Moderator of Konkan tv,You need to wake up from thinking viewers are fool….Many are educated and can think better than you..Dont be too wise.

Hi All,

What does it cost to host a video sharing site? Can anybody provide list of indian service providers which provide video hosting services????

Regards
Tanmay.

Reply

Madhav July 30, 2007 at 12:30 am

absolutely nothing.

konkan tv is a ‘indian video sharing infrastructure provider’, and they provide hosting service for absolutley no costs at all…

…hold on a second.. when i say hosting services, i dont mean you can host videos on their site.. i mean a LOT more.. get in touch with the webmaster of the service, and you could have your video sharing site hosted on their infrastructure for 0$ !!. if would be completely customised with your branding… and your content… no fine print.. no catches…
!!

their servers aint small shared virtual hosts. they use extremely expensive and reliable datacenters and bandwidth providers. (a reverse dns lookup would show you that they steam their videos from amazon’s datacenter)

Tanmay, most of the video sharing sites allow upload of videos for free and the one’s listed in the post are video sharing sites targeted towards Indian audience (They are not necessarily hosted in India)

Hey thanks a lot Venu and Madhav,

for the superfast response. Well konkan.tv looks like what I have been loooking for and will surely get in touch with them for details.

But its hard to believe tht they share their infrastructure specially whn most of the international video hosting service providers have monthly bandwidth limit ranging from 1000 to 2000 gb’s per month….

I will surely post back with details about my venture..stay tuned

tanmay.

There is a recently lunched Indian site http://Flicksharing.com which shares 50% of revenue with users. There is no upload of video only simple copy paste of embed code from youtube, yahoo video and Google video. Users can also share Photo and Web pages. This is a cool site where all favorite video from Youtube Google video and Yahoo video can be stored at one place and shares with fiends and family Plus 50 of revenue also .
