Adobe Digital Editions

by venukb on October 31, 2006

Adobe labs has come out with Digital Editions which is supposed to be a completely new way of reading and managing e-books.

Digital Editions is built from the ground up as a lightweight, rich Internet application (RIA). Digital Editions works online and offline, and supports both PDF and XHTML-based content.

This is an early Windows only beta edition released by Adobe to get a quick feedback from users. More details can be found at the FAQ section of Digital Editions. Also you can find a bunch of free e-books here.

My thoughts:

The install was pretty easy and was done online via a flash widget. I was totally impressed by the slick UI (including the

Michael Schumacher - What Next ?

by venukb on October 29, 2006

As many of the die hard Formula 1 fans might be knowing, last weeks Brazilian Grand Prix was Michael Schumacher's last career race. I have been watching F1 from around 1995/96 and till now I have watched almost all the races with great enthusiasm. With Schumachers exit, I am not sure If I will ever watch an F1 race with the same enthusiasm. I happened to see some funny videos on the Raceday Program (Star Sports), which was aired before the Brazil Grand Prix. Here are the 3 videos: 1. Pit Stop 2. Is He Real ? 3. Club Smart...

Problem with Graphics Card

by venukb on October 27, 2006

My Acer notebook has a ATI Mobility Radeon X700 Graphics card with 256MB VRAM. Playing games with this high end card is always a treat ! However from the past few weeks, I am facing a weird problem.Image Courtesy: AMD ATI

It all started when I was playing one of my favorite games : Railroad Tycoon 3. This game was running normally for a few days. One day the screen suddenly went blank and the best I could do was to restart the system (after doing a forceful shutdown).

I tried the game few more times and ended with the same result; Display blanks out and doesn't

New Feed URL

However my feedburner stats suggest that many are still using the old feed URL. Request those readers to please shift to the New Feed URL.

As you can see from the image, the old feed URL will soon be

Mozilla gets a cake from Microsoft

by venukb on October 26, 2006

I am not sure how true this is, but it seems that Mozilla got a cake from Microsoft IE Team for the release of Firefox 2.0 !

Checkout some interesting comments for this post on Digg

even their cake probably has bugs in it

It was a nice gesture from the IE7 team. I guess developers don't take these "browser wars" as seriously as the users do.

One reason why the above comment is true is because the IE team needs browser wars to keep their jobs. If Mozilla doesn't keep posing a challenge, the Microsoft IE devs will eventually lose their jobs since there won't be a reason to keep improving. They're effectively thanking the Mozilla

Firefox 2 is out !

by venukb on October 25, 2006

Firefox 2 (codenamed Bon Echo) is now officially released and is available for download here. I checked for updates from within the browser, however I was prompted with a message saying that no new updates were available. This means that Firefox 2 is not being pushed via the update mechanism as of now !

I had got hold of the Beta version of Firefox 2.0, some 5 months back, when I was actually searching for Firefox 3; codenamed Minefield. You can find more about the Firefox 2.0 features here. The transition from 1.5 to 2.0 was not so painful. Most of the plugins were ported onto the new version (i.e.

PicLens

by venukb on October 25, 2006

Alec from CoolIris mailed me regarding PicLens, a new product from CoolIris. (Check my post on CoolIris here)

PicLens is a first-of-its-kind browser plug-in that transforms your browser window into an immersive cinematic experience for viewing web images.

Compared to the traditional, sluggish way of viewing of images of the web, the PicLens viewing experience is vivid and lightning fast. With just one click, PicLens instantly makes images, albums, and even thumbnails come to life through its full-screen browser window. Its slick user interface even lets you channel between images with your Apple(R) remote control.

I don't have a Mac(Safari browser) and hence not able to see it working ! I am not sure if it

IE7 out of Beta

by venukb on October 20, 2006

IE7 is officially out of Beta and every other blog in my RSS feed is talking about this !

One post which is worth reading :

Chris Messina - The beast has awoken; or, The beginning of Web 2.0

Also checkout the official post on IE7 release here !

I have been looking at every other Beta Release of IE7 and also had written a post some time back. This picture summarizes the new features.

As I have mentioned in the post, there is not a single feature which is tempting me to shift from Firefox. On the contrary, I am using the RC3 version of Firefox and its working great
