Install Eclipse Plugins - The Easy Way

by venukb on August 20, 2006

Eclipse as of today is the industry's major non-Microsoft software tool platform. The number of companies adopting this platform is a testimonial of the platform's success. (Check my previous post for more on the history of Eclipse IDE) Eclipse has a well-designed, and extensible architecture. What is valuable about Eclipse is that it provides an open source platform for creating an extensible integrated development environment. This platform allows anyone to build tools that integrate seamlessly with the environment and other tools. The key to the seamless integration of tools with Eclipse is the plug-in. With the exception of a small run-time kernel, everything in Eclipse is a plug-in. This means that a plug-in you develop integrates with Eclipse in exactly ...

Windows Live Writer - Powerful Desktop Based Weblog Client

by venukb on August 17, 2006

The WYSIWYG editor in worpdress is one of feature that is used most by any user using wordpress to host the website. However this builtin editor is pretty slow and to write/publish every post, you need to login to the administration console. Desktop based weblog clients are a good alternative and these clients help you in quickly posting content and also modifying the content. I transitioned through these applications: 1. Initially I used the builtin editor of Wordpress. I found it very slow and it was painful especially when I had to make some corrections (Spelling mistakes etc). If you use the rich editor in wordpress, it does take a lot of time to display the content (One reason is also because ...

Google Analytics - No Invitation Needed

by venukb on August 17, 2006

Google Analytics is a free service offered by Google that generates  detailed statistics about the visitors to a website. Google recently acquired Urchin Web Tracking system and made it available via Google Analytics.

If you have content behind a security firewall or on an intranet or internal network that prevents you from using the Google Analytics service, you can use the original Urchin Software (Note that this is a paid service )

Download Urchin Software

Till few days back, Google Analytics was available only by invitation. In contrast to "invitation" based marketing, this invitation could not be sent by users using Analytics, it was sent out only by Google. When my AdSense account

by venukb on August 12, 2006

Few months back when I tried to sign up for the Windows Live Mail Beta, I was just asked to register and was told that I would be notified when the service is available. It was never done ! Few days back when I was checking the Windows Live Ideas Page, I happened to see a signup link next to Windows Live Mail Beta. I signed up and lo my normal Hotmail account got converted into a Windows Live Mail account. Did I like it ? My expectation from Microsoft were pretty high and I should say I was thoroughly disappointed. This is what Microsoft says about the Windows Live Mail: Its all-new Web mail, built ...

Google Special Search

by venukb on August 11, 2006

One problem of extensively using the Google Toolbar (Browser Toolbar) for search is that you will miss some of the customized search features that Google provides. I just happened to stumble upon Google’s Special Search feature. The special search allows you to narrow your search based on a specific topic. Currently the following specialized services are available: University Search Google's University Search enables you to narrow your search to a specific school website. You can try it for things like admissions information, course schedules, or alumni news. Google US Government Search Wonder why only US Government, this can be definitely extended to other countries. It will really be very useful. Google Linux Google BSD Google Apple Macintosh - Search for Apple/Macintosh-related ...
