by venukb on December 30, 2006

BSNL has slashed tariffs on Broadband services which is effective from 1st Jan 2007 The highlight of the new tariff plan is the 2Mbps bandwidth being offered across all plans. However there is also a disclaimer in the form of this statement - Wherever technically feasible ! Unfortunately I use Airtel Service and I am hoping that they will also revise the tariffs soon !

by venukb on December 30, 2006

Paul Stamatiou has written a nice series on building a web app using MySQL and PHP.

How To: Code your First Web App

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3

I always wanted to try my hands on PHP and these articles are pretty good to get started on PHP and MySQL.

Also don't forget that there is a nice IDE for PHP which is being built on the Eclipse Platform :)

Camel-Case Search in Eclipse

by venukb on December 26, 2006

I have extensively used Eclipse for the past 2 years and as with every other IDE, the first thing I do is to find out/use the keyboard shortcuts in the application.

Eclipse is a great IDE to work with and I should probably start a series of posts which might help me and others in becoming a Eclipse "power user" :)

R.J. Lorimer has an interesting post on how to use the Camel-Case search in Eclipse.

Many users struggle with the Search Dialog in Eclipse to find a class. In fact you can quickly lookup/Search a class using "Open Type" (Ctrl+Shift+T) dialog.

Till now the only filters I was using was the ? and the *

Eclipse 3.3

by venukb on December 21, 2006

If you didn't know Eclipse 3.3 is already in progress and you can grab the latest milestone release M4 here.

The release is code named as Europa and you can find all the new and noteworthy features here :)

One of the complaints with Eclipse has been the slow startup. There seems to be a major improvement in performance in terms of startup and UI responsiveness.

Google Search does math too

by venukb on December 21, 2006

I was talking to my brother the other day on phone and I had to quickly convert 4lbs to Kg's. I was about to search in Google for a unit converter and he reminded me that I could do this easily in Google Search itself !

I just had to enter "4lbs in Kg" in the Google search box and it returned this result :)

Some other examples !

2^20 in hex cube root of 125 5 Feet in inches

In fact Google's calculator goes beyond basic arithmetic to do complex math and crunch physical constants, too. It will process queries such as "G * mass of earth." or "speed

Del.icio.us Links and Full Feeds

by venukb on December 19, 2006

I find a lot of nice articles and its difficult to blog/comment about every other article. Sharing these links directly makes more sense and the best way to do is to deliver it as part of your RSS feed.

Feedburner is a widely used feed publishing service and even the feeds of Online Diary are delivered via Feedburner. The service has a link splicing feature via which you can share your collected links as a part of your RSS feed.

FeedBurner supports the following Link Services: Digg, del.icio.us, Furl, Bloglines, My Web 2.0 and Magnolia

As of now del.icio.us is my favorite bookmarking service and you

Digg Reloaded

by venukb on December 19, 2006

I was surprised to see only 6 posts in the Digg RSS feed;Later I found out that Digg was out of service for a major upgrade !

Checkout this video for more on the new features of Digg.

So what is new ?

Digg UI now goes widescreen and it looks totally pathetic on my widescreen monitor. I don't know why this change was made; the old UI looked a lot better.

The same goes for the placement of the profile link on the main header. Again looks very awkward !

The Top 10 feature is definitely useful !

There are some enhancements on video diggs; you can now see the preview of the video on

by venukb on December 17, 2006

The present day market in India is flooded with second-hand cars. Also there are plenty of finance options available for second hand cars.
